LEGAL GUIDANCE
Moving to The Gambia: a legal preparation checklist
Plan residence, work, housing and family documents separately so that one part of the move does not rest on an unchecked assumption about another.
What should be checked before making long commitments?
Explain your nationality, current residence, reason for moving and intended length of stay. Identify whether you expect to work, run a business, retire or join family. Entry, residence and work permission are separate questions to investigate for your circumstances.
Check the current position with the Gambia Immigration Department and obtain advice where your situation is unclear. Buying property, registering a company or marrying should not be treated as automatic confirmation of the right to live or work in the country.
How can housing decisions be kept manageable?
Review a proposed rental agreement before paying substantial advance rent or moving in. Clarify the term, deposit, repairs, utilities, occupation and arrangements for ending or renewing the tenancy. Keep an inventory and evidence of the property’s condition.
If buying, allow time for property due diligence. A short visit or a relocation deadline should not replace checks on the seller, records and occupation. Consider who will manage the property if your travel or residence plans change.
Which family and financial records may matter?
- Identity and relevant immigration records.
- Marriage, divorce and children’s records where relevant to the move.
- Existing court orders or parental travel arrangements.
- Employment, business, rental or purchase documents.
- Wills, powers of attorney and information needed by your tax advisers.
Ask the receiving authority which originals, copies, translations or authentication it requires. Do not pay for a document service before checking that it is the correct one.
Who needs to advise on the overseas side?
A move can leave continuing tax, employment, property or family obligations in your former country. Coordinate the Gambian legal work with appropriate advice there, especially where children, a pension or an existing business are involved.
Prepare a timetable showing permit dates, travel, housing commitments and decisions that cannot wait. Start with the immigration and residence guide, and use work permit guidance if employment or an assignment is planned.
